(i) A = \(\begin{bmatrix} 2 & -4 \\ -1 & 2 \end{bmatrix}\)
A is a matrix of order 2 × 2 and p(A) ≤ 2
Second order minor
|A| = \(\begin{bmatrix} 2 & -4 \\ -1 & 2 \end{bmatrix}\)
= 4 – 4 = 0
∴p(A) ≠ 2
First order minor is non vanishing
p(A) = 1

(ii) A = \(\left[\begin{array}{rr}
-1 & 3 \\
4 & -7 \\
3 & -4
\end{array}\right]\)
A is a matrix of order 3 × 2 and p(A) ≤ 2
Second order minor
\(\begin{bmatrix} -1 & 3 \\ 4 & -7 \end{bmatrix}\)
= 7 – 12 = -5 ≠ 0
∴ p(A) = 2
